A miracle cure for skin diseases: what CBD can really do

November 23, 2020

Who does not dream of perfectly healthy and radiant skin? There is a good reason why the skin care market was worth around 135 billion dollars in 2018 alone. People are willing to spend a lot of money on the latest trends in the cosmetics industry, one of the biggest trends in recent years is the use of CBD in skin care products.

From creams, ointments, serums, body lotions to soaps, there is an endless range of beauty products on the market that contain CBD as their main ingredient. So what is the real truth about this trend? What is CBD actually good for and does it actually deliver what it promises? Is there scientific evidence to support the claim that cannabidiol is a "miracle cure" for skin diseases? If so, for which skin diseases exactly is CBD best suited?

We would like to get to the bottom of these questions in this blog post so that you can get the most important information that will help you to choose the right skin care products for your skin.

But let's start at the beginning:

What exactly is CBD?

First of all, CBD (cannabidiol) is – in contrast to more popular THC – the non-psychoactive component of cannabis and thus one of the many cannabinoids that make up the plant. CBD is extracted from the plant as a powder and then diluted with other oils such as hemp or coconut, resulting in the so-called CBD oil. Can you actually get "high" from CBD oil? Not at all. That's the great thing about CBD: it provides all the benefits of the plant, but without the influence of mind-altering substances. These advantages range from the relief of pain (even in the case of serious diseases), the positive influence on anxiety states to the improvement of often chronic skin diseases.

Even though there are already numerous studies that prove the extraordinary effectiveness of CBD, we still lack scientific evidence to show how much CBD oil benefits health and especially skin care. The biggest problem here is that most of these studies are carried out on animals and not on humans, which simply means that we lack relevant experience.

Another hurdle is the approval by the authorities. Because it is still unclear what exactly CBD is and what effectiveness it can actually achieve, politicians are trying to put a stop to CBD production because the legal situation is not yet clearly defined in many places. But here, too, the signs are clearly pointing to change, with more and more countries relaxing their regulations and introducing rules that are clearly designed in favour of CBD production and trade with CBD.

INDICA Skincare, for example, has succeeded in developing the first skin cream approved for the European market that contains high doses of CBD as one of over 25 100% natural and active ingredients.

Can CBD oil help with skin problems and serious skin diseases?

CBD is popular as an ingredient in skin care because it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can positively influence various skin diseases and help you to have healthy and radiant skin. Furthermore, there is little evidence (other than isolated allergic reactions) that CBD oil has any harmful effect on the skin. This finding makes CBD a particularly interesting ingredient in skin care products. Especially its ability to reduce inflammation of the skin makes CBD particularly interesting in the fight against serious skin diseases. Here we give you an overview of the most common skin diseases for which CBD can provide relief. We still would like to point out in detail that we distance ourselves from any medical information and that you should definitely seek a consultation with your dermatologist for these.

CBD can help against these skin diseases:

Psoriasis

As a chronic autoimmune disease, psoriasis can be incredibly irritating and unpleasant. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for this insidious skin disease, but there are treatments available to relieve the symptoms.

Because of its anti-inflammatory and calming effects, CBD is getting more and more important as a popular remedy. Basically CBD inhibits the growth of keratinocytes, which accelerate the growth and division of skin cells and thus regulate the skin's growth cycle. There is some debate about the effectiveness of creams over oils although experts recommend to approach the issue from both sides: from the outside and from the inside.

Eczema

There are more and more reports from consumers who are surprised about the positive effects of CBD in connection with eczema.  Eczema is an inflammation of the skin that occurs frequently in diseases such as atopic and seborrhoeic dermatitis. Eczema is usually characterized by red, itchy rashes on the skin and is usually treated with creams containing cortisone. Although this treatment is effective, it often has many negative side effects and is known to dry out the skin even more and cause irritation. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory and microbial action, CBD (preferably in the form of an oil) soothes and protects the skin by fighting bacteria and preventing the spread of infections. In addition, CBD skin care products support the work of the body's own endocannabinoid system, which helps to keep the balance in the body in check and thus combat the symptoms of eczema.

Acne

Acne is not only a big issue for teenagers, more and more adults are affected by it and complain through it about many inconveniences and problems in their social and professional life. Acne is a type of skin inflammation that occurs when the pores of the skin are clogged with dead skin, bacteria or excessive sebum production. Acne is one of the skin diseases that can be combated in many ways with CBD-containing products.

First, studies have shown that CBD reduces sebum production in the sebaceous glands - although sebum normally protects the skin by keeping it smooth and supple, increased sebum secretion is considered as one of the most common causes of acne. CBD also prevents inflammatory cytokines in the skin cells from becoming active, which can also trigger acne and cause more breakouts.

Due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties, applying CBD oil to the skin can reduce the risk of bacterial and dirt infections.

And that's not all: stress is considered one of the main triggers of acne and skin redness, and since CBD has been shown to be particularly useful in combating stress and anxiety, it stands to reason that skin care products containing CBD can prevent the formation of further acne outbreaks caused by stress.

Acne Scars

Everyone who has ever had acne knows that acne scars are very unpleasant – especially visually. The CBD skin care industry, through the products it markets, is especially drawing attention to the many benefits of cannabidiol in skin injuries, such as scars caused by acne and other skin inflammations. For example, one study has shown that the use of CBD hemp oil has been shown to improve the appearance of the skin and has a positive effect on its elasticity and moisture content – removing unwanted scars and discolouration from the skin.

Skin cancer and CBD

Unfortunately, there is not enough scientific evidence to conclude that CBD is actually capable of curbing the growth of cancer cells. However, there are some studies that suggest that cannabinoids may cause cell death, but most of these studies have been conducted in animals, and most experts agree that more research into the various benefits of CBD oil in relation to skin cancer is needed before valid conclusions can be drawn. However, we don't want to withhold the positive developments in this area completely from you – for example, one research result has shown a significant decrease in tumour size in mice that had melanoma. However, this requires many times more data before CBD can be approved as a valid treatment option.

One thing is certain: CBD has few to no side effects or interactions when taken concomitantly with other drugs, so it can be used as a complementary treatment to other cancer drugs. Because of its anxiety-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties, cannabidiol can also help patients cope with some of the side effects of chemotherapy and other cancer treatments.

The numerous benefits of CBD, especially in relation to skin diseases, show that it is not surprising that more and more manufacturers of cosmetic products consider CBD as an essential component in the development of their skin care lines. As more and more CBD products can be found on the shelves of high-end retail chains, the image of cannabis is rapidly changing from the cliché of the "stoner drug" to an image associated with a high and luxurious lifestyle. It is therefore no big surprise that more and more consumers are interested in skin care products containing CBDs. Add to this the natural and organic element that is currently on everyone's lips and it becomes clear why the popularity of CBDs in the beauty industry has increased so much. A trend that has probably come here to stay.
